Hi all,
I have searched a lot everywhere without being able to find a clear answer to this question: is it possible to buy a G1 today without signing the 2-years contract with T-Mobile ?

Possible means this should be a factual option, without tricks or a matter of randomness

- somewhere it is stated that it is possible, for $399
- somewhere it is stated that it is NOT possible and never will be :(
- somebody says that at the moment it is not possible, but this option is planned to be offered strating from 2009

In other words, I am really confused :? :? :?

I just bought one on (8/6/2008) for $399 at a T-Mobile store, w/ no contract.
It appears that actual T-Mobile stores will sell you one for $399+tax
It also appears that some franchisers currently do not want to sell these
without a calling plan, so you may need to try different places.
Note: this is locked to T-Mo and must be unlocked. Cost me $24 for key
at www.unlock-tmobileg1.com. Currently using G1 on AT&T (2g only).
Apparently, you can get an unlocked G1 for the same price
if you register with Google as a developer.

Emlinux, thank you very much for the detailed report of your experience.
It's a pity not to be able to rely on 3G networks for fast data exchange.

Now that the announce of dev phone 1 is official, I think that the best approach is to get an unlocked G1 as a developer.
As alternative, I was wandering to wait for a while and to address the phone announced by the Australian company (I forgot the name).

See you in the forums.
